MARION, S.C. – The Marion Chamber of Commerce received 405 copies of Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox ready for distribution to all third grade students in the county for a fourth straight year.
Author Kate Salley Palmer and husband Jim Palmer personally deliver the books from Clemson to director Cindy B. Rogers. The book recounts the historic tales of the Revolutionary War general with illustrations drawn by Palmer’s son.
“The more I read the more I realized how involved South Carolina was in the Revolutionary War,” said. “As I researched I figured Francis Marion would be a great subject for a book. “ Palmer is the author of four books including one on the contributions of African Americans in the fight for America’s independence.
Rogers said contributing to student’s personal library is a meaningful moment. “The Chamber is proud of this project to expand our student’s knowledge and the history of General Francis Marion,” she said. “Over the past three years we have placed over 1,200 books in the hands of every third grader in Marion County. “
Rogers said a book-plate inside each book list the sponsors for the project.
Mr. and Mrs. Palmer,
Thank you so much for the beautiful book that the Chamber sponsors for our students each year. It's always a pleasure to have wonderful partners in educating our children.
Thank you again,
Dr. Dan Strickland Superintendent Marion County School District
