What does Kate do at a visit? Kate will read a couple of books for the first 30 minutes of a session, then answer questions from both students and teachers. The choice of her books depends on the age of the students and the interests of the teachers. The total time for each session is usually 40 to 45 minutes.
What size group works best? Kate will speak to any size group – sometimes an entire grade for a session. Of course, smaller groups allow for more student-author interaction. She uses a PowerPoint projector to show the books and reads or paraphrases the text. One requirement is that each student be able to see the pictures and be able to hear Kate. How much does an author visit cost? Kate charges $500 for up to three groups per day. Schools within an hour’s drive of Clemson do not pay for any travel expenses, but for those over that distance, we need to charge a mileage fee of 40 cents per mile, roundtrip from Clemson.
How do we prepare for the author visit? For best results for student engagement and interest, students and teachers should be familiar with Kate’s books. We offer a 15% discount on all books for teachers and librarians. Student projects about the books, such as art displays or student summaries of the books, have been used by some schools to enhance student interest in writing and illustrating books.
How can students and/or parents purchase books? Jim will send to the school an order blank, with sales tax and a 10% discount already figured, so that teachers can send the information home ahead of the visit. At the school, or ahead of time, Kate will autograph all books purchased.
NOTE: All requests for school visits will go to Jim Palmer.
