Francis Marion CD-ROM Well Received by Teachers
On October 5, at the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies meeting at Myrtle Beach, Jim gave a presentation about Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox: A Guide for Teachers.
He told over 50 teachers about the CD-ROM's resources, which include a PowerPoint, timeline, glossary, list of important names, and other information pertinent to the life of Marion. Dawn Hooker and Mary Beth Smith, two teachers from Powdersville Elementary (Anderson District One), spoke to the group about how they have used the CD-ROM and two of Kate's books (Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox and Palmetto: Symbol of Courage) to help with lesson plans and make South Carolina history more interesting for their third-graders. Mrs. Hooker said, "We were looking for ways to improve instruction with a more hands-on approach." And Ms. Smith said that the CD-ROM "has been a great additional tool to use with the students." The CD-ROM is $12 (or $25 for a combo of the CD-ROM and Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox). Teachers, order your copy today!

New Books Ahoy!
Kate continues to work on her new book, Invisible Soldiers: Black Patriots of the American Revolution. She's completed the story and the preliminary sketches for the illustrations, and she's now turned her attention to the final artwork. African Americans—from those who fought in Francis Marion's brigade to the more than 5,000 who fought alongside white soldiers in the Continental Army—made significant contributions to the victory over the British.
James is also making progress on his new book, The Very Talented Baby, and he'll present it at the SC Association of School Librarians' meeting next March.
