WELCOME TO WARBRANCH PRESS, INC.

New book, First South Carolinians, is out!

It's been a while in the making, but Warbranch Press announces the release of a new picture book about the Native Americans of South Carolina, entitled First South Carolinians.  The authors are Kate Salley Palmer and Jim Palmer, and the illustrator is James Palmer, Jr.

The book was a real family venture, with Kate doing all the initial research until two surgeries sidelined her in 2011.  That's when Jim took over summarizing Kate's notes from the several books she read on the subject.  After back and shoulder rehab, Kate edited the text for elementary and middle school students.  James did extensive research for the illustrations which vividly show how the native people lived in present-day South Carolina.

Indian book cover

First South Carolinians gives the reader a detailed picture in words and pictures of the culture of native people of our state before European contact.  Since the native people didn't have a written language, Europeans - first, the Spanish and then, the French, were the first to record how the native people looked and lived.  The Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, first encountered the native people and called them Indians because the explorers were looking for a shorter route to India.
